Details

Join us for a private, 2-hour guided tour of the Orangerie Museum, home to one of the world's most extraordinary collections of 19th- and 20th-century art.

Engage closely with the works of Cézanne, Matisse, Modigliani, Renoir, Picasso, and of course Monet, exploring the artistic revolutions that shaped modern art. Admire Cézanne's vibrant studies of fruit and flowers, Matisse's striking portraits, and the evocative works of Renoir and Modigliani before arriving at the highlight of the museum — Monet's breathtaking Water Lilies. Displayed in two custom-built oval rooms, these monumental panels offer a tranquil, immersive experience, often described as "the Sistine Chapel of Impressionism." As you stand before these vast, luminous landscapes, you'll understand why they are considered the crowning achievement of Monet's career — masterpiece of light, movement, and emotion.

Don’t Miss It! Fantastic Guided Tour for an Unforgettable Museum

Babylon and our guide Zdravko saved our trip - we had especially wanted to visit L’Orangerie museum, but tickets were sold out on our last day in Paris. By booking the tour we were able to access the museum and we had an absolutely amazing guide, Zdravko, who has a Master’s degree in Fine Arts as well as an engaging, intriguing personality. As an artist himself, Zdravko had a very unique perspective and in depth knowledge of the artists and paintings at the museum. We got so much more out of our visit with Zdravko’s expert commentary. The museum itself...

Special Place

Special place, especially after seeing Giverny, Monet's home and gardens. Took a small tour of four people and it was wonderful. Hint is that Uber drivers and taxi drivers aren't that familiar with this museum, and we were dropped off far from the museum itself.

Would give this tour 10 stars if I could! Fantastic!

We had a perfect tour of L’Orangerie with Sunday! We had visited Monet’s beautiful water lilies in the past but learned so much more about the entire history of the museum, relationships to other artists, as well as interesting insights about Monet. We asked if we could tour with Sunday again since she did such a fabulous job on this tour. Highly recommend.

Our guide, Dunja, was terrific. In addition to describing the artist’s techniques, she provided explanations of the art’s historical and cultural contexts. Her descriptions were clear and easy to understand—but not simplistic.

FAQ's

The tour runs approximately 2 hours — enough to cover Monet's Water Lilies in depth plus the Walter-Guillaume Collection without feeling rushed.

Meet on the right side of the main entrance to the Musée de l'Orangerie, located in the Jardin des Tuileries. Your guide will confirm the exact spot by text the morning of the tour.

No — Reserved Entry tickets are included in the tour price. Babylon Tours handles the booking, and the guide brings them to the meeting point.

Children are welcome, and those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Water Lilies rooms tend to engage younger visitors well — the immersive scale is striking even without art history background.

No — a moderate level of walking ability is enough. The route is entirely indoors on flat floors, and the museum is small compared to the Louvre or Orsay.

Only handbags or small slim backpacks are permitted inside. Large bags and suitcases aren't allowed — plan around this if arriving from a hotel or station.

Bring a photo ID or at minimum a clear copy or phone image of your passport. ID may be checked at the entrance or required for the ticket.

Roughly 15 to 25 major works, depending on group pace. The Water Lilies cycle alone is a focal point — eight monumental panels in two oval rooms — and the Walter-Guillaume Collection downstairs adds another set of focused stops.

No — the tour focuses on the permanent collection, which is the museum's draw. If a temporary exhibition interests you, visit on your own after the tour ends.

The collection covers Monet (the Water Lilies cycle), plus Cézanne, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani in the Walter-Guillaume Collection. Strong examples from each, including Renoir's Young Girls at the Piano and Cézanne's Luncheon on the Grass.

The Water Lilies are the centerpiece of the tour — eight panels Monet gifted to France to commemorate the end of WWI, displayed in two custom-built oval rooms designed specifically for them. Often described as the 'Sistine Chapel of Impressionism.'

Guides explain Monet's vision for the cycle, his symbolism, and his artistic process — including how his deteriorating eyesight in his final years influenced the work and how the oval rooms were designed in collaboration with Monet himself.

The Walter-Guillaume Collection on the lower level is part of the tour — works by Cézanne, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani that complete the museum's late 19th- and early 20th-century scope.

You're welcome to stay on after the guided portion and explore at your own pace until the museum closes. Many visitors return to the Water Lilies rooms after the guide leaves for quiet time with the panels.

The collection spans Impressionism (Monet, Renoir) and Post-Impressionism (Cézanne, plus Modigliani's distinctive portraits and Picasso's early modern work), so both movements are well represented across the 2 hours.

The 2-hour format and the focused, manageable scale of the Orangerie make it well-suited for travelers short on time. You get genuine depth with Monet's Water Lilies plus a strong 20th-century collection without committing a half-day.

The tour is designed for general audiences — no art history background needed. Guides explain context as they go and the Water Lilies are striking even without prior knowledge.

The Orangerie pairs particularly well with the Orsay — both focus on the same era of French painting, with the Orangerie's intimate scale offering depth where the Orsay offers breadth. It also complements the Louvre by extending the chronological arc forward.
