Details

Join us on a 5.5-hour private tour that explores the masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age, from the grand halls of the Rijksmuseum to the very streets and studio where Rembrandt lived and worked.

With an expert guide leading the way, trace the evolution of Dutch art and step inside the world of its most celebrated master.

Begin your day at the Rijksmuseum, home to the Netherlands' most treasured artworks, including Rembrandt's The Night Watch and Vermeer's luminous The Milkmaid. Marvel at the exquisite detail of 17th-century still lifes, where artists captured the richness of Dutch society with astonishing realism. Beyond the museum's renowned paintings, explore a curated selection of historical artifacts, intricate doll houses, and grand merchant portraits, each offering a glimpse into the wealth, innovation, and artistry that defined the era.

After a short break, step outside and follow in Rembrandt's footsteps through Amsterdam's historic center. Walk along the grand canals where he found inspiration, pass through the former Jewish Quarter, and visit Rembrandt Plein, once a marketplace and now a tribute to the artist's legacy. Finally, conclude your journey at Rembrandt's house, where he lived and worked at the height of his career. Explore his studio, see his original etchings, and gain rare insight into the daily life of one of history's greatest painters.

By the end of this tour, you'll have experienced the grandeur of the Dutch Golden Age and the intimate world of Rembrandt, walking away with a deeper appreciation for Amsterdam's artistic and cultural legacy.

Itinerary

  • Stops generally include but are not limited to:
  • Rijksmuseum– begin your day at the Netherlands' premier museum, home to masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other Dutch Golden Age painters. Explore a curated selection of works from the museum's vast 8,000-object collection, including exquisite paintings and historical artifacts. (2 hours 30 minutes)
  • Spiegelkwartier– begin your journey at the historic Singel Racht canal, once the outer defensive moat of Amsterdam. From here, stroll through the Spiegelkwartier, a district renowned for its art galleries and antique shops, offering a glimpse into Amsterdam's artistic heritage. (10 minutes)
  • Emperor's Canal (Keizersgracht)– walk along Keizersgracht, the widest of Amsterdam's three main canals. Lined with grand 17th-century merchant houses, this canal was once home to the city's wealthiest residents, shaping the backdrop of Rembrandt's time. (10 minutes)
  • Museum Van Loon (EXTERIOR ONLY)– admire the elegant exterior of Museum Van Loon, a former residence of Ferdinand Bol, Rembrandt's most distinguished pupil. This beautifully preserved canal house offers insight into the opulence of the Dutch Golden Age. (10 minutes)
  • Bloemenmarkt– wander through Amsterdam's famous floating flower market, where vibrant stalls line the canal selling tulips, bulbs, and souvenirs. Enjoy views of the Munttoren (Mint Tower), a remnant of the city's medieval fortifications. (10 minutes)
  • Munttoren (Mint Tower)– originally part of Amsterdam's medieval city wall, the Munttoren once served as a mint during the 17th century, producing currency when the Netherlands was at the height of its economic power. (10 minutes)
  • Rembrandt Plein– visit one of Amsterdam's most vibrant squares, Rembrandt Plein, named after the city's, most famous artist. Once a marketplace, this lively area has evolved into a cultural hub, surrounded by historic architecture, Cafés, and tributes to the painter's enduring legacy. (10 minutes)
  • The Amstel River– follow the path along the Amstel River, home to two of Amsterdam's most iconic bridges: the Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug), a charming wooden drawbridge dating back to 1934, and the Blue Bridge, inspired by the bridges of Paris and reminiscent of Amsterdam's 17th-century past. (10 minutes)
  • National Opera & Ballet– pause outside the Stopera, a striking modern complex that houses both the Dutch National Opera & Ballet and Amsterdam's City Hall. Its construction was a point of controversy, taking over six decades to be realized. (10 minutes)
  • Jodenbuurt (Former Jewish Quarter)– walk through the historic Jodenbuurt, once the heart of Amsterdam's Jewish community and a place deeply connected to Rembrandt's life. This district is now home to the Jewish Cultural Quarter, preserving centuries of history. (10 minutes)
  • Museum Het Rembrandthuis– finally, enter and explore Rembrandt's former home, where the master artist lived and worked between 1639 and 1656. Explore his recreated studio, see his original etchings, and gain insight into the daily life and techniques of one of history's greatest painters. (1 hour – Admission Ticket Included)

Guided Tour of Riksmuseum

This tour was the highlight of our visit to Amsterdam. Anita, an art historian, expertly guided us through Rembrandt's paintings at the beautiful Rijksmusem and his home where he worked and lived. It was through her passion and lens that we learned so much about his life and work. We highly recommend this tour and Anita!

Angelo was super!

Angelo was full of information and energy - he really knew his stuff. It was great to see some of the highlights of the Rijksmuseum with him, but also to hear about the history of the building and the city/country as well. We also enjoyed walking through the city with him as he was just a constant font of knowledge. We would definitely recommend him!

Only with a qualified guide can you navigate the museum and see all the highlights with ease. Anita answered all our questions with knowledge and confidence and a good sense of humor.
