Details

Join us on a 2.5-hour guided tour that traces the life and legacy of Rembrandt van Rijn, Amsterdam's most celebrated painter.

Follow his journey through the heart of the city, from the grandeur of the Golden Age canals to the bustling marketplaces that inspired his masterpieces. Led by an expert guide, this walking tour brings the world of 17th-century Amsterdam to life before culminating in a guided visit to Rembrandt's former home and studio.

Stroll along the canals that shaped his artistic vision, passing historic landmarks like the Skinny Bridge and the Blue Bridge. Walk through the Jodenbuurt (Jewish Quarter), where Rembrandt lived among Amsterdam's thriving creative and intellectual circles. Stop at Rembrandtplein, a square dedicated to the artist's legacy, and visit the Bloemenmarkt and Mint Tower, once part of the city's medieval defenses.

Finally, step inside Rembrandt's home at the Museum Het Rembrandthuis, where he lived and worked at the height of his career. See his studio, personal belongings, and original etchings, gaining rare insight into his daily life and artistic process. By the end of the tour, you'll have walked the streets that shaped him, explored the spaces where he created, and uncovered the genius behind his enduring masterpieces.

Itinerary

  • Stops include but are not limited to:
  • Spiegelkwartier— begin your journey at the historic Singelgracht canal, once the outer defensive moat of Amsterdam. From here, stroll through the Spiegelkwartier— a district renowned for its art galleries and antique shops, offering a glimpse into Amsterdam's artistic heritage. (10 minutes)
  • Emperor's Canal (Keizersgracht)— walk along Keizersgracht, the widest of Amsterdam's three main canals. Lined with grand 17th-century merchant houses, this canal was once home to the city's wealthiest residents, shaping the backdrop of Rembrandt's time. (10 minutes)
  • Museum Van Loon (EXTERIOR ONLY)— admire the elegant exterior of Museum Van Loon, a former residence of Ferdinand Bol, Rembrandt's most distinguished pupil. This beautifully preserved canal house offers insight into the opulence of the Dutch Golden Age. (10 minutes)
  • Bloemenmarkt— wander through Amsterdam's famous floating flower market, where vibrant stalls line the canal selling tulips, bulbs, and souvenirs. Enjoy views of the Munttoren (Mint Tower), a remnant of the city's medieval fortifications. (10 minutes)
  • Munttoren (Mint Tower)— originally part of Amsterdam's medieval city wall, the Munttoren once served as a mint during the 17th century, producing currency when the Netherlands was at the height of its economic power. (10 minutes)
  • Rembrandtplein— visit one of Amsterdam's most vibrant squares, Rembrandtplein, named after the city's, most famous artist. Once a marketplace, this lively area has evolved into a cultural hub, surrounded by historic architecture, Cafés, and tributes to the painter's enduring legacy. (10 minutes)
  • The Amstel River— follow the path along the Amstel River, home to two of Amsterdam's most iconic bridges: the Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug), a charming wooden drawbridge dating back to 1934, and the Blue Bridge, inspired by the bridges of Paris and reminiscent of Amsterdam's 17th-century past. (10 minutes)
  • National Opera & Ballet— pause outside the Stopera, a striking modern complex that houses both the Dutch National Opera & Ballet and Amsterdam's City Hall. Its construction was a point of controversy, taking over six decades to be realized. (10 minutes)
  • Jodenbuurt (Former Jewish Quarter)— walk through the historic Jodenbuurt, once the heart of Amsterdam's Jewish community and a place deeply connected to Rembrandt's life. This district is now home to the Jewish Cultural Quarter, preserving centuries of history. (10 minutes)

Van Gogh guided tour

Jo, the guide, was amazing. I don’t know much about art but it was an incredible and interesting trip through Van Gogh’s life and art. I am really glad I got the guide - there’s a lot to take in and it’s way more relaxing having someone who can explain it. I had a great time.

Amazing introduction to Rembrandt and his sad life

Recently refreshed in 2023, this exhibition in Rembrandt’s home in Amsterdam was so interesting. We had hesitated to visit – but can only say we really enjoyed our 90 minutes there and were so glad we had come! It cost 20 euros but provided free lockers for bags and coats and then with an excellent audio tour led you through a succession of rooms from bottom to top explaining how they were used. (No coffee shop but plenty nearby. The house is full of 17th century paintings by Rembrandt’s students – all well explained, and there are even bits of...
