Highlights generally include:

• Dam Square & Amsterdam's Historic Churches— stand in the heart of the city at Dam Square, surrounded by landmarks like the Royal Palace and the New Church.

• Leaning Houses & Amsterdam's Unique Architecture— marvel at the city's famous leaning houses, a result of Amsterdam's soft, waterlogged soil. See the city's narrowest house, a testament to the ingenious use of space in a city built on canals.

• The Oldest Canals & The Sea Dike— walk along the city's original canals, once essential for trade and defense, and see the medieval Sea Dike, which protected Amsterdam from rising waters.

• Nieuwmarkt Square & The Waag— explore this lively market square, once a commercial hub outside the old city walls, and admire the Waag, a former medieval gatehouse that later became a guildhall and weighing house.

• The Medieval City Gate— step back in time at one of Amsterdam's last surviving medieval gates, a relic from the days when the city was fortified against invaders and rival merchants.

Details

Join us on a journey through the heart of Amsterdam, where centuries of history, trade, and culture have shaped one of Europe's most fascinating cities.

On this 2.5-hour private tour, you'll uncover the stories behind its medieval origins, its rise during the Dutch Golden Age, and its transformation into the modern metropolis we see today. Walk through Dam Square, the city's political and historical core, surrounded by grand landmarks like the Royal Palace and the New Church. Wander past Amsterdam's oldest canals and leaning houses, remnants of a time when merchants shaped the city's skyline. Discover Nieuwmarkt Square and the striking Waag, a medieval gate that has served as a weighing house, guildhall, and even an anatomical theatre. Along the way, explore the multicultural energy of Chinatown, stroll along the Amstel River, and admire architectural gems like the historic Begijnhof and the iconic Skinny Bridge.

By the end of the tour, you'll have explored Amsterdam's rich past, from its medieval walls to its Golden Age splendor, and gained a deeper appreciation for the unique charm and resilience of this one-of-a-kind city.

Hidden gems and history - must do

Our tour guide Huibert was amazing! He was so articulate, so knowledgeable and also personalized this experience for our interests. Yes, we got a wonderful overview history of Amsterdam but what really made this a memorable and magical time were all the hidden gems of Amsterdam he shared in a why a guidebook just can’t. I think the title should be “City Center and hidden gems of Amsterdam”! Cannot recommend tour or Huibert more highly.

Extremely Pleasurable and Enlightening

Over a period of about 6 hours we covered a massive amount of ground from the red light district to the museum district and everything in between. Our guide Lawrence had a huge knowledge of the city with some added extras. Being foodies, his experience as a restaurant cook was invaluable. Visited a kitchen shop that had ever gadget imaginable, a out of the way cheese shop and even had lunch in the restaurant he worked at where the food and service was excellent. The whole tour worked out better than expected and gave us a real in depth view of Amsterdam.

He even sent me some information after our tour that he knew I was interested in. We loved having coffee with him at the end of tour so we could ask questions and guidance for our stay.
