Tour Description

Discover more about this tour

Holland’s version of the Louvre is essential when visiting Amsterdam, and this semi-private guided tour of the Rijksmuseum will introduce visitors to the seemingly endless collection that curates Dutch history over the centuries. This 2 to 2.5 hour museum tour allows you to join no more than 8 travelers on a visit with a dashing young guide who will lead you through the museum.

For those who aren’t familiar with Dutch culture – and who is really? – we will explore its rich and vibrant past through a selection of works from among the 8000 objects on display. We’ll discuss familiar names like Rembrandt as well as lesser known items like 17th century dollhouses. Understand the meaning behind Vermeer’s “The Milkmaid” and marvel at the expansive 19th century library. At the end of the tour, you’ll have a good overview of the museum’s collection and you may even know how to pronounce its name correctly.

Highlights Include: (if artwork is not on loan or being restored etc.)

Rembrandt masterworks

The Nightwatch

The Jewish Bride

The Syndics of the Drapers’ Guild

Vermeer’s The Milkmaid19th century library

17th century dollhouses, globes, ship replica, and Delft ceramics

Very good tour. our focus was on 17th century artists such as Vermeer and Rembrandt.

This two hour tour was great! Our tour guide was well informed and an American so language was not a barrier. She gave lots of insight to the art and artists. You don't have to wait in line and can stay in the museum after the tour to see more of the collection. They have a fun gift shop but I would skip the restaurant. Expensive, long line and food is just okay.

Loved having a private tour. Our group was only 6 people or so. The guide told us such interesting facts about paintings that gave me so much more excitement looking at paintings than I had before. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to go but, like me, doesn't know what to look for in art.

  • FrankK FrankK

Our guide was wonderful! She gave us a brief history of the museum which was very interesting. We looked at quite a few paintings and she pointed out the details, explained the painter's style and compared the artist to others in that time period. When the tour was over she also emailed us our tickets which allowed us to stay in the museum or come back later that same day! We would highly recommend this tour!

  • MICHAEL D MICHAEL D

Our small group tour turned out to be a private one. The young woman that accompanied us through the museum was extremely knowledgeable, very informative and had a lovely personality!!! Absolutely made our trip! Can't wait to book another tour through Viator!

  • Margaret Gates Margaret Gates

Our guide was an art history major. She gave very intimate descriptions of the motivation and background of the artist as well as the influence each painter had on the work of others and vice versa. There was a focus to her guided tour that I found helpful to keep the stories and the art and artists in my mind as a picture map. Well worth the money.

  • Ericka Mclaughlin Ericka Mclaughlin

2.5+ hours well spent. Not only was our guide Victoria knowledgeable about art, but also the history of The Netherlands and the social and cultural issues of the time. It was very apparent that Victoria enjoyed sharing her knowledge with us.

  • Jim Lyons Jim Lyons

Josephine was excellent. So knowledgeable. Added to our enjoyment of the Museum. We did skip the line, not necessary today.

  • Robin Mitchell Robin Mitchell

Selina was a fabulous guide who brought the paintings alive by initially taking us to see items of glass and porcelain - an area of the museum that we would never have thought of visiting. Its always a relief to be shown around a museum by someone who knows exactly where to go to see the highlights without the crowds - and then really explains what we are seeing and asks us to really look at the pictures and look beyond the obvious - 2.5hrs of wonderful art history. Thank you!

  • Rene Bowen Rene Bowen

My husband, another couple and I enjoyed a 6+ hour tour today with Victoria, our guide, along with 4 other people. It was well worth the cost to avoid the incredibly long lines and to have an extremely knowledgeable guide explain the history and background behind the works of art we saw. These 2 museums are not to be missed and we felt that having an art history major who was passionate about her subject matter made it entirely worthwhile. We would advise anyone to splurge on this tour if you’re at all interested in getting the most out of your time at these two gems of museums.

  • Chase Duncan Chase Duncan

Our guide, Tea, was so full of knowledge of the artists, art work, culture, and community. I never would have learned this much without her insight. Was a wonderful day and a highlight of my entire Amsterdam trip!

Tour guide Victoria did an excellent job leading us through this wonderful museum. Her knowledge base is deep, and she provides the information in an insightful and intriguing manner. You will be fascinated with the the tour and the art, no matter what your level of art expertise is. Doing a tour of the museum with a small group led by a guide is well worth the cost. Highly recommended.

Excellent tour with a very knowledgeable guide. Victoria was really good and fun to be with. She was very knowing of art and quality of the paintings. She showed how some pieces were nearly flawless and how some were not perfect. Much historical background was provided. We also visited the basement rooms and saw the many model ships, old guns, and relevant items. All of this was in amazing condition.

  • Jennifer Neal Jennifer Neal

I had scheduled a private tour and had to make a change to a semi-private one because our guide got sick. At first, I was not pleased and worried that the experience would not be what I had hoped. Thankfully, it was great. The guide, Victoria, was terrific! The museum is also simply wonderful.

  • Deann Giles Deann Giles

Instructions on our meeting point were easy to follow and our guide, Audrey, arrived in plenty of time to greet us. She spoke excellent English (she is originally from USA) and was professional and knowledgable. Our tour was with 6 others (8 total) and took us in chronological order through the Rejksmuseum, so it brought the history of Amsterdam to like through the artwork. We enjoyed it greatly.

  • Asa Simon Asa Simon

The museum is amazing. However, be sure when you book your tour that you receive your entry tickets from the tour guide. She did not give us the tickets. To get a snack or even use the restroom required leaving the ticketed area and so we could not get back in even with our voucher for the tour. I really would have loved to spend more time after the tour going through the museum. Also our guide was very soft spoken and hard to hear. Not very engaging.

Angelo led us through the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt's home and the streets of the city. His knowledge could not have been better and we learned so much about the history, art and culture of Holland. We had a great day in Amsterdam.

  • Aimee Booth Aimee Booth

We were a group of only three and had a great time. I never felt rushed or overwhelmed, as I often can at galleries or museums, and learned a lot. We saw all that we’d hoped to and Audrey is so knowledgeable. She has a gentle manner, and we all loved spending the morning with her. Thanks Audrey!

  • Noelle Prince Noelle Prince

We had a Fantastic tour. Our guide, Eve, was knowledgable and personable and pitched the tour well to our interests. We had a fabulous day!

  • Mayra Braun Mayra Braun

While the small group tour is expensive, Angelo made it well more than worthwhile. His base of knowledge in the art field was outstanding! He overextended himself by providing a great amount of background information, supported by extensive pictures on his iPad, about various artists and their individual works. He easily handled questions from several guests who had a great deal of knowledge about various art ages. artists and there relation with each other. We highly recomend this tour. Be prepared to be overwhelmed.

  • Shelby Rios Shelby Rios

It was only my spouse and I and it could not have been better. Victoria knew what she was talking about and knew how to draw us into the art; how to let us see the small things your brain processes on auto pilot, turning them into the Big things that *make* a piece. She knew the history of the city and the artists. We will be lucky to get another guide like her, but she is why we will most likely book more private tours.

  • Stephan Davila Stephan Davila

So worth doing. We are a family of four and were the only ones on the tour with Ilaria. She was a great guide and explained the background and context of paintings and artists that was memorable and really brought the paintings alive.

  • Edgar Quinn Edgar Quinn

Great paintings and knowledge from our guide. His in-site helped to bring the paintings alive. The time went too quickly. We would be happy, and look forward to another tour with him at this museum or another.

  • Tanner Tapia Tanner Tapia

Our guide Victoria was extremely knowledgeable and spent a great deal of time sharing that knowledge with our small group of four. She was very enthusiastic about not only the items but also background about the artists and Dutch culture. Very informative and fun.

  • Bert Rice Bert Rice

o stars, guide did not show, I had to buy a ticket and tour the museum on my own. Very disappointed in aviator! I was only 10min late…
