Highlights of the tour

Highlights generally include:

• Rosetta Stone- the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs, this artifact unlocked the mysteries of an ancient civilization, making it one of the most important discoveries in linguistic history.

• Parthenon Marbles- these stunning sculptures, once adorning Athens' Parthenon, showcase the artistic mastery of classical Greece and the grandeur of its most revered temple.

• Lewis Chessmen- a striking set of 12th-century Viking-era chess pieces, carved from walrus ivory, offering a glimpse into medieval craftsmanship and Norse influence in the British Isles.

• Diego Velázquez - Rokeby Venus- a rare surviving nude from Spain's Golden Age, this masterpiece blends sensuality and refinement, with its mysterious mirror reflection adding to its intrigue.

• Leonardo da Vinci - The Virgin of the Rocks- a masterpiece of Renaissance composition, da Vinci's atmospheric use of light and shadow creates an ethereal scene, rich in symbolism and mystery.

Details

Experience the very best of art and history on our 5.5-hour private tour of two of London's most renowned institutions: the British Museum and the National Gallery.

From ancient civilizations to Renaissance masterpieces, this tour offers an expertly curated selection of highlights, ensuring an engaging and immersive experience. Begin at the British Museum, home to some of the world's most extraordinary artifacts. Unravel the mysteries of Ancient Egypt before the Rosetta Stone, the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. Marvel at the Parthenon Marbles, sculptural masterpieces from Athens' most famous temple. Return to Britain and trace its history from Roman rule to the medieval era, uncovering the intricate treasures of the Sutton Hoo burial and exquisite Roman silverware. Along the way, uncover stories of empires, lost civilizations, and the objects that shaped human history.

After a short break, head to the National Gallery and trace the evolution of painting from the Renaissance masters-Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo-to the drama of the Baroque, where Caravaggio's The Supper at Emmaus stuns with its dramatic use of light and shadow. Compare the meticulous precision of Vermeer and Van Eyck before moving into the modern age, where Turner's seascapes, Monet and Seurat's shimmering Impressionist visions, and Van Gogh's Sunflowers changed the course of art forever.

This combo-museum tour distills centuries of history and art into a single unforgettable experience, offering a deeper appreciation of the artifacts and masterpieces housed in London's most celebrated collections.

Fantastic Tour

Our tour with James was great! He was friendly, knowledgeable and got into the queue early so we were one of the first in line. We upgraded to have it be a private tour with just myself and my husband and it was totally worth it. We got to see and hear very interesting. facts and details about the museum and then had time to wander around when the tour concluded. I would highly recommend this tour and if you’re lucky, you’ll have James as your guide!

Brilliant experience!

Sheldon was amazing… note the British museum is HUGE. On the tour you will see a little less but learn more. He has a delightful personality and is great a story teller that provides honest perspective on what you see and how it got to the museum.

Having a guy is essential to understand the context of extensive exhibits at the museum. "Guy the Guide" exuded pride and passion for the museum and for Great Britain. His thorough knowledge sprinkled with a little bit of British humor brought the museum to life! Going with a small tour is important because the large groups are restricted from certain rooms. If you plan on visiting the British museum, I highly recommend this tour to make the most of your visit.

Great tour of British Museum

Great time with our guide, Ivo. Very knowledgeable across a number of subjects, gave us a broad survey of various areas of the British Museum. Was a pleasure to talk with, answered the kids questions readily, even on things he wasn’t planning to guide us on. Also wasn’t rushing out at the end and took a couple extra minutes with us. Overall great experience.

Both venues have so much to see but Mathilda gave us a good overview and then focused with great knowledge on many key parts of both. We recommend the tour and Mathilda as a guide!Erik and Hope

Matilda rocks!!

Matilda was an AMAZING tour guide. She started by asking what we wanted to see or was interested in and then personalized the tour based on that. She was entertaining, intelligent and well spoken about all the pieces we viewed during the tour. Would highly recommend Matilda as a tour guide for anyone who wants a specialized great tour of the British museum. Her depth and breath of knowledge was second to none.
